Happy Easter! Welcome to -Soapbox Sunday-

Matthew 28:1-10

The Resurrection

1 Early on Sunday morning,[a] as the new day was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb.
2 Suddenly there was a great earthquake! For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone, and sat on it. 3 His face shone like lightning, and his clothing was as white as snow. 4 The guards shook with fear when they saw him, and they fell into a dead faint.

5 Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as He said would happen. Come, see where His body was lying. 7 And now, go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead, and He is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see Him there. Remember what I have told you.”

8 The women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel’s message. 9 And as they went, Jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to Him, grasped His feet, and worshiped Him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t be afraid! Go tell my brothers to leave for Galilee, and they will see me there.”

Hello, and WELCOME to the first edition of "Soapbox Sunday." (It may well be the only edition..LOL!! Depends on if anyone joins me) HA!! Seriously, though... I realize that I couldn't have picked a busier weekend so don't let me put too much pressure on you guys.

As I've been saying all week... it'll be a chance for us to "preach" our little hearts out about any and everything. (No, I don't mean literal preaching, I just mean fulfilling the Titus 2 calling) OH, and if you do want to post under this new meme.. just leave a comment and we'll "blog hop" our way around. =-) If we have a few ladies to join in over the next few weeks I'll set up a "Mr. Linky" and have a graphic/code set up. I suppose we'll see? ;-)

So.. for my first post I want to talk about the third commandment.

"Thou shalt not take the Name of the LORD, thy GOD in vain."

When I hear someone misuse the LORD'S Name it makes my skin crawl. I chose this for today because the LORD'S name is so commonly misused that it's now accepted as just another "slang" word.

I wanted to take our boys to watch a new movie that's coming out. It's rated "G." AWESOME! But wait, when researching on Dr. James Dobson's site pluggedinonline.com I quickly found that the movie used the term "Oh my God" more than once. So.. could someone PLEASE tell me WHY movie makers can't make a movie that's family friendly that DOESN'T misuse the LORD'S Name? Oh YEA... THIS is where my soapbox begins..

What does it mean to take the LORD'S Name in vain? Well, I've heard it said that the Jewish people (GOD'S CHOSEN PEOPLE) had such a fear and reverence for GOD that they wouldn't even use the name GOD. (Can anyone confirm that?) So, taking the LORD'S name in vain is not only when it's used to curse, but ANY TIME that's it's used in a light manner. The easiest way to explain how I've heard this taught is that if we're not talking TO GOD, or ABOUT HIM... we should NEVER use HIS name. Those are the only two instances we would be using it in a way that HONORS HIM.

What do you think??

SOOOOO Good! It drives me CRAZY when people do this!! It is like nails on a chalboard to me. I suppose that is evidence of the Holy Spirit living in me so I am thankful of that. This Soap Box Sunday idea is gonna be good, I can tell already! I will have to think of something to "get on the box about".

Happy Easter, Tonya, you are a sweet, wonderful, and Godly friend!

Love, Kelley

I totally agree with you. There are so many times that people use His name the way described. Sad that even though the movie was rated "G" you still have to watch out. I think it is cool that you can research the movies on Dr. Dobson's site :)

Thank you for sharing.

Blessings to you and yours this Resurrection Sunday. I better get my booty to bed so I can rise for the Sunrise service :)

I agree 100%! At the Teen Center I volunteer at... we constantly have to ask the kids not to say "Oh My God", etc. They don't use other swear words--because they know our rule about that... but they constantly take the Lord's name in vain like its no big deal. It's sad! However, 99% of the kids that come in there don't come from Christian homes. We try our best to thwart their awful words toward the Lord!

I like your SoapBox Sunday idea... Unfortunately, I can't really think of anything to write about at the moment!! Hope it gathers a lot of interest from other bloggers!!

Hope your family has a blessed Easter!!! Christ has risen indeed!

Hey, can I jump on that soapbox with you today???

I really have problems with this too.

Thank God we have places to check out movies BEFORE we bring out kids to them. You really can't trust ratings these days for sure.

Thanks Tonya,I'll be joining you next Sunday for sure.

Happy Easter♥

Tonya - I agree with ya. Our son's friends do this a lot. I can handle a lot from people, but don't be disrespecting my God in any way, shape, or word because momma Andrea is not "down" with that!! So, now they know :-)Blessings to ya today!

My husband has really made a big deal out of this subject in our house. Our kids won't let the neighbor kids get away with saying God's name in vain when they come over.

I'm going to join in on the next Soapbox Sunday. Whenever I tried getting on the Internet today I couldn't get anywhere. It was extremely slow here, maybe because it's Easter. I'm finally able to get somewhere in the Internet now, but it's almost 10 PM.

Hi Sweet Tonya,
I have been out of town all weekend, so I missed the soapbox for today. Turns out that my father in law doesn't have DSL so my laptop wouldn't connect...maybe that is my soapbox for the day! Haha!

Your topic is very interesting because of the timing. We visited my SIL church this morning and their Sunday School class was viewing a video by Andy Stanley on this very topic. I seriously had never given much thought to it. Anyway, the direction that the clas took was something different than cursing, etc. The point of the lesson was to remind us not to do things for ourselves and saying that it is what God wants. I probably left with more questions than answers on this topic, but I thought I would throw this out to you to see what you thought. If I didn't just ramble beyond comprehension!! Haha!

I am so glad to have wonderful friend like you! I hope to be on the soapbox next week!
Love you lots!
Stephanie

Happy Easter, Tonya and family! Hope you had a good day. I haven't even blogged yet today, but I am in agreement with you on hearing the Lord's name taken in vain. It churns my stomach. I am amazed at how often it is said not only on t.v. and in movies, but just in normal conversations with others. My kids have been known to blurt out, "Ummm, they said a bad word!" That bewilders people on occasion. :)

I think you are exactly right. We should not use His name except in a way that honors HIM. I can't stand to hear people misuse His name! Makes me crazy! I am sick that our children can not watch a movie because of the language. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I loved this post - God Bless~
