Soapbox Sunday (???)

Hello, Friends....

I'd mentioned earlier this week that I'd be posting on modesty. I'm WAY BEHIND on EVERYTHING I was supposed to do today, and honestly.. I'd not even started on this post until just now. I'm seriously starting to wonder if a Sunday "meme" was such a great idea anyway.

SOOOOO... with no pressure from me, if it's just too much and there are no posts with me on "SS" then I'll give up this idea. My heart was to have a day just to ramble about what GOD has been showing us, and I still want to share what GOD'S showing me. However, as a home-schooling mom, and a busy wife I know even the best of intentions can quickly become a burden. I sure don't want to do that to anyone.

Okay, on with the post...

We know that GOD looks at our hearts, not the "tent" we live in. However, the Bible tells us to make sure that we wear proper clothing.

JESUS said that if a man even looks at a woman with lust in his heart, he has committed adultery with her already. So, this tells us that tops that are too low, or shorts/skirts that are too short may tempt our male counterparts to "fall into sin." That doesn't only apply to "men," I've even seen our little ones (10 and 7 year old boys) "look away" when they see a female that's not properly covered.

It's kind of scary when we go shopping to see some of those new "barely there" styles, isn't it?

Now, here is a passage that gives us some biblical guidelines...

1 Timothy 2:9-10 (New American Standard Bible)

Women Instructed

9Likewise, I want (A)women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,
10but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.

The dictionary gives this meaning to the word "modesty."

Main Entry: mod·es·ty
Function: noun
Pronunciation: 'mä-d&-ste
1 : freedom from conceit or vanity
2 : propriety in dress, speech, or conduct

Okay.. that's all I've got. I'm PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY DRAINED! Ha!! I hope you're having a great weekend. Thanks SO MUCH for stopping by. If you're posting on Soapbox Sunday just leave a comment and we'll blog-hop around - finding what GOD has shown each of us.

Tonya, what an appopriate post. I just went shopping yesterday and came home so discouraged. I would love to refresh my wardrobe just a little, but finding things my size (I am short) and that are modest is very difficult. Even finding one piece bathing suits for my girls is not always easy. I know they are young, but I think I should start modesty now rather than later. I am amazed at the styles I see, even for preschoolers...

i definitely think its important to be modest... I also know, though, that even if your clothes cover you up quite well.. they also shouldn't be too tight!! i remember a time a number of years ago where some folks i knew were describing me to someone so that he would know who i was when he saw me (he was new in town)... and the couple's son (who was probably 17 at the time) made comment on me being the girl with the "big chest"(in other words). i never ever even gave a thought to the shirts i would wear... and they were just Tshirts... but once i got to know the new guy--(ended up being an ex boyfriend 8 months later!)... and he told me about it... i was really embarrassed. i never intended to wear shirts that were too tight - i can't help what God gave me... but i'm WAY more conscious about it now. not that i want to look like a slob in a giant tshirt... but i try to find a happy medium!

it also bugs me (from personal experience with a family member)... when someone wears something WAY revealing... that looks like it came out of Fredericks of Hollywood... and a short skirt and high heels... (while in the position of being a "queen" of the town festival)... and complains that people are staring at her. even her own mother was getting irritated that guys were looking at her......... (these are "christian" people)... and i'm thinking... if you would've worn something APPROPRIATE... no one would be staring! but in a case like that... do you SAY something? i didn't want to ruffle their feathers... but i was embarrassed for her. she looked like a prostitute. literally. i mean, i would've wanted someone to tell me if something was inappropriate - even if it did make me feel embarrassed... i'd rather know than NOT (you know, like having something in your teeth and no one telling you all night!--lol)...

there is just so much pressure these days to be the perfect size and wear the perfect clothes... every where you turn - you see it... mostly in the form of half naked people in magazines! its sad!

What a great topic! One that I definitely think and worry about a lot more with a little girl in the house. And her daddy worries about that, too! :0)

You definitely deserve a day off! I don't know how you keep up with homeschooling and all the memes!

Enjoy your Sunday!
Love & FROG . . .

Tonya,
I am posting on your soapbox today but I have a totally different topic. It is something I have been thinking about for awhile and then, like a lightbulb over my head, I thought it would be a good Soapbox Sunday topic!

Hang in there friend, this is just a season and it will surely pass. I will pray that God will restore peace and calm to your life and heart soon!

Love, Kelley

Hi, Tonya. I just stumbled upon your blog through Amy's Then Sings My Soul Saturday. I am so with you on the clothing issues!! And, what really breaks my heart is that we see it just as much in our churches. Some of the young girls and grown women that walk through the doors of our churches on Sunday mornings need to turn right around, go home and start again. It is really sad when our men and young boys can't even escape sexual temptations in God's house.

This is a subject I would love to share about. Being a mother to girls who are moving out of the "little girl" phase and into the "tween" stage is getting harder and harder. I find it very hard to dress my kids in things that are cute and "with it" and not trashy.

I have resorted to ordering a lot from Lands End to outfit my kids with modest clothing.

Maybe I should blog about this subject too. =)

Good Morning, Tonya! It sounds like you had a crazy busy weekend -- although, it sounds like fun, too! (especially the part about finally getting to hold Allie Grace!)

This is definitely a topic that concerns me... on several levels. As a mommy to a little girl I want to teach her modesty in both her actions and her dress. I am concerned, too, for the young girls that I come in contact with daily. It just amazes me what I see on girls these days! I am already praying about how I handle this particular topic with my daughter when she is older.

I pray you have a great day -- one that includes relaxation and maybe a few extra minutes with your hubby since he's been out of town!
